HOW DO SESSIONS WORK?
Psychotherapy is an evidence-based treatment that relies on theory and dialogue (conversations) grounded in skill. It provides a supportive, non-judgmental, and safe environment that allows for open discussions with a mental health professional who is objective and specially trained to help you with your issues.
During sessions, you and your mental health professional will work together to identify and change thoughts and behaviors that prevent you from living your best life. The frequency of sessions will vary based on the condition being treated, your lifestyle, and your therapist’s practice.
As conversation is a core component of psychotherapy, you must be actively involved in the therapy process. Trust and the relationship between you and your therapist are crucial for effective collaboration and benefiting from therapy.
Mental health professionals prioritize confidentiality and the preservation of your privacy, which is part of their professional ethical code.
You may give your mental health professional written permission to share all or part of your conversations with your primary healthcare provider, family members, teachers, or anyone else if you wish.
ADVANTAGES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY
Research shows that about 75% of individuals participating in psychotherapy experience some form of benefit and can function better in their daily lives. Studies also indicate that psychotherapy improves emotions and behavior and is associated with positive changes in the brain and body.
Therapy is more likely to be effective if you:
- Are open and honest with your therapist.
- Are committed to making positive changes.
- Follow the agreed-upon treatment plan.
- Are willing to fully engage in therapy and complete any assigned tasks (if applicable).

DURATION AND NUMBER OF SESSIONS
How long you will need psychotherapy depends on several factors, including your specific reason for seeking therapy, your goals, and your active engagement in addressing your issues.
Psychotherapy can be short-term (a few sessions) focusing on immediate problems, or long-term (months or years) dealing with mental health conditions and/or complex issues. Together with your therapist, you will establish treatment goals and agreements on how often and how long you will meet.
You might consider yourself "done" with therapy once you have resolved the issue that brought you in and have learned new skills to better handle future challenges.
Many people attend psychotherapy multiple times throughout their lives, whether for the same or various issues.
Recognizing and prioritizing your mental health is one of the most valuable steps you can take for yourself.
